Congresswoman Andrea Salinas, who has represented Oregon’s 6th District in the U.S. Congress since 2023, addressed several issues in a series of tweets on May 5, 2026, ranging from Native women’s safety to wildfire preparedness and the significance of Cinco de Mayo.
On the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP), Salinas highlighted violence against Native women. In her post dated May 5, 2026, she stated: “More than 4 in 5 Native women have lived through violence. Native families have spent generations searching for their loved ones whose cases never made it into a federal database. Today, on National Day of Awareness for #MMIP, we honor their lives and demand that full justice”.
Later that day, Salinas marked Wildfire Awareness Month by encouraging constituents to stay informed as wildfire season approaches. On May 5, 2026, she posted: “May is Wildfire Awareness Month! As we enter wildfire season, it’s crucial to be informed and prepared. Check out these resources to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe! https://t.co/i2nb6QobeQ”.
Salinas also commemorated Cinco de Mayo by reflecting on its historical roots and drawing parallels to contemporary challenges faced by communities. In her tweet from May 5, 2026, she wrote: “Cinco de Mayo marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla, when smaller Mexican forces defeated a much larger French army. We celebrate the unity and resilience many of our ancestors showed. We must once again rely on that same unity and resilience as our communities are attacked by the”.
Andrea Salinas was born in San Mateo, California in 1969 and currently resides in Tigard. She earned her BA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994 before serving in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023.
