Congresswoman Andrea Salinas, who represents Oregon’s 6th District in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to reflect on significant milestones in American history and to mark a personal occasion.
On December 5, 2025, Salinas commemorated the anniversary of a pivotal event in civil rights history by posting: “On December 5, 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott began — a key moment in the modern Civil Rights Movement. We remember and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and many other civil rights heroes who were part of this momentous boycott in furthering”. The Montgomery Bus Boycott is widely recognized as a turning point that propelled leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. into national prominence.
The following day, December 6, staff members took over Salinas’ account to celebrate her birthday with constituents: “Staff takeover! Hey Oregonians, wishing Congresswoman Salinas a very, very happy birthday! https://t.co/aZBdt9yxU8”.
Later that same day, Salinas marked another historic milestone by noting the ratification of an amendment central to American history: “160 years ago today, our nation ratified the 13th Amendment, abolishing the horrific institution of slavery. The 13th Amendment was a defining step toward equality, but our work to build a more just nation continues.” The Thirteenth Amendment was adopted on December 6, 1865 and formally abolished slavery throughout the United States.
Andrea Salinas has served as U.S. Representative for Oregon’s newly created 6th District since 2023 and previously held office in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2017 until her election to Congress. Born in San Mateo, California in 1969 and now residing in Tigard at age 53, she is an alumna of UC Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree awarded in 1994.
