Linn County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Feb. 28.

Linn County Sheriff Michelle Duncan announces her Search and Rescue Team is recruiting young men and women, ages 14 to 18, to join and participate in a 10-day summer training program. The academy will be held June 17-27, 2022.

This will be the 28th Search and Rescue Training Academy in Linn County and serves as a leading mentoring program for the area.  Search and Rescue team members often work alongside deputies of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.  Young men and women build resiliency and gain valuable leadership and professional skills impacting their future personal and professional lives.

Past members of this elite team have gone into careers in law enforcement, computer programming, architecture, nuclear physics, business, and members of the armed forces. Many past members continue to serve Linn County in various roles throughout the community, long after their time with Search and Rescue.

Those who are interested in becoming an integral part of the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Mission should have an interest in community service and a desire to be a part of a highly trained and professional life saving organization.

There is an application process that includes oral interviews, a background check and physical aptitude test.  Applicants must attend one recruit meeting at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office on March 14, April 11, or May 9, at 7:00 pm., to attend the academy.  Successful applicants will be eligible to attend the 10-day Search and Rescue Training Academy in June.  This training will include classes in wilderness survival, shelter building, search tactics, first aid/CPR, map and compass reading, rappelling, and many more topics.

For more information about the program contact Lieutenant Joe Larsen at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office (541-812-2272) or visit the Linn County Sheriff’s Office website at www.linnsheriff.org.  Online applications are available on the website and at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in Albany.
