State of Oregon issued the following announcement on Apr. 12.

Today at the State Land Board meeting, Governor Kate Brown, Secretary of State Shemia Fagan, Treasurer Tobias Read, and the Department of State Lands and the Elliott State Research Forest Advisory Committee held a bill signing ceremony for SB 1546, which creates the Elliott State Research Forest in collaboration with Oregon State University and their College of Forestry.

The Elliott State Research Forest resulted from years of work done by the Elliott State Research Forest Advisory Committee, which was formed by the State Land Board to bring together competing interests to find a solution to a decades-old conflict surrounding the Elliott.

“The formation of the Elliott State Research Forest shows that Oregonians can come together, work around a common vision, disagree passionately about details, but still find a way to compromise and reach an outcome that represents a real win,” said Treasurer Read. “When we step outside of our silos, we can do big things here in Oregon.”

Congressman Peter DeFazio praised the creation of the Elliott State Research Forest and Treasurer Read’s leadership on this issue:

“I applaud the State Land Board and the Elliott State Research Forest Advisory Committee for coming together to resolve a decades-old conflict affecting Southern Oregon, establishing the Elliott State Research Forest. I particularly want to commend State Treasurer Tobias Read and his office for their leadership,” said Rep. DeFazio. “I spoke frequently with him and his team about potential solutions, and it was under his leadership that Oregonians came together and found consensus on this project. The state research forest will protect vital public lands, support habitat conservation, and enhance recreational and educational activities alike. I’m thankful for leaders in Oregon like Treasurer Read who are dedicated to protecting and preserving our natural world.”
